Road crews will resume construction on the hydro duct work during the week of March 23rd on Highway 99 from Function Junction to Village Gate Boulevard.

This project, which began in 2008 is essential for improving highway shoulder widening and pull-outs, bus stop improvement and better grading at Nordic Hill.

Phase One of the hydro duct work begins in mid-March and will finish up at the end of April.

Phase Two, which is the shoulder widening project, will begin at the end of April and continue until the middle of June.

Both projects will involve drilling, blasting and rock excavation, with some work being conducted during the night.

Advance notice will be given to businesses and residents as to when this work will be taking place.

The Nordic Hill improvements will be done from May to July this year but not to worry, this construction will take place in the evenings, which will minimize any inconvenience to travelers.

Road closures will take place between 11pm-2am and 3am-5am.

Single lane, alternating traffic will also be implemented.

The World Cups in Whistler Creekside starts on January 15th, 2009 with the cross-country skiing events that consist of three different competition formats.

The 'pursuit' event is a 15 kilometer race broken up halfway for athletes to quickly change poles and skis.

"'Individual sprint' starts with a qualifying lap for the first round. The competition is narrowed down by quarter-final, semi-final and A and B final rounds. The final round consists of 6 skiers who compete for the gold medal.

The third format is the 'team sprint' with a team of two skiers alternating the course for six laps. The best five teams from the semi-finals then move ahead to the final round.

The Nordic combined event scheduled for the 2009 World Cups in Whistler consists of a competition grade ski jump followed by a ten kilometer race.

With the addition of the Whistler Olympic Park, we are one step closer to 2010. The Whistler Olympic Park, located in the gorgeous Callaghan Valley, has many features including a 55 kilometer trail for cross country skiing.

A 5 kilometer trail has also been set up for night skiing in Whistler. The trail is fully lit and offers skiers the opportunity to ski when it best suites their schedule.

The four days of testing and evaluation by the International Bobsleigh and Tobogganing Federation (FIBT), the International Luge Federation (FIL) and the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) will allow the venue operators to move ahead with the next phase of planning and have the facility fully operational in the coming months.

The Whistler Sliding Center is the 15th Sliding Center to be built worldwide and has undergone 4 days of intensive testing. The evaluation of the Sliding Center was carried out by the FIBT (International Bobsleigh and Tobogganing Federation), FIL (International Luge Federation) and VANOC (Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games. These tests and evaluations will allow the builders and operators to continue planning the next phase in order to have the facility complete, long before the opening of the 2010 winter Olympic games.

The team will arrive at the Vancouver airport at 3:49 PM on Saturday December 13, 2008 (domestic terminal) and is expected to be greeted by a large group of Jamaica bobsleigh fans and supporters.

The team will then travel to Pemberton where an official welcome is scheduled for 1:30 PM on Sunday, December 14, at the Pemberton Community Centre. Later on Sunday, the team will tour the Whistler Sliding Centre from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM.. The team will be available for media interviews in Pemberton after the community reception or in Whistler prior to the sliding centre tour.

Whistler Blackcomb's new Peak to Peak Gondola will begin operating for the public on Friday December 12, 2008. The new gondola is technical marvel joining Whistler Mountain and Blackcomb Mountain peaks. The gondola spans 1.8 miles or 3 kilometres.
