With so many avalanches in the area, Whistler has now adopted a zero tolerance for skiers and snowboarders entering closed areas.
With over 89cm of snow in only 7 days and an underlying weakness in the snow pack all across southern British Columbia, people need to be extra cautious. Avalanche danger has been rated High to Extreme and any back country travel is not recommended.
Dogs and handler teams are essential in helping those buried in avalanches and Whistler mountain will be hosting a training program through the Canadian Avalanche Rescue Dog Association (CARDA) from January 12th to the 16th. Thirty teams will be attending, with experience levels ranging from beginners to seasoned handlers.
For those looking for Whistler accommodation from the United States, please keep in mind that traveling between the United States and Canada by land, sea or ferry, may be required to show a valid U.S. passport.
