What's On Whistler - December 2007

December is the time to celebrate the glorious arrival of winter, complete with festive lights and holiday fun for all ages. While skiers and boarders delight in the first powder swooshes of the season -- Whistler Mountain opened early on November 17 thanks to great early snowfall -- the village below is bustling. Look for live entertainment including film, opera and dance.

Whistler Blackcomb has had a busy year; with last season's second largest snowfall on record, the opening of the Symphony Express high-speed quad lift in December 2006 and the construction launch of the world-record breaking Peak to Peak Gondola, set to span Whistler and Blackcomb mountains. Whistler Blackcomb is pleased to present an open house, showcasing all that is new and exciting. The community is welcome to come by Legend's in Creekside between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Located on Blackcomb Mountain, the Pontiac Race Centre is groomed and re-set daily with a dual Giant Slalom course by 10 a.m.

Kokanee Valley Race Series: Season Opener - GS on Blackcomb
December 13, 2007

Held on Thursdays throughout the season, the Kokanee Valley Race Series is open to skiers, telemarkers and snowboarders with a number of different gender and age divisions. No racing experience is required to join in on the fun of recreational racing. All you need is the desire to participate and Whistler Blackcomb will look after the rest.

Park Rider Series: Rail Jam on Whistler
December 16, 2007

Park Rider Sessions featuring Slopestyle, Rail Jams and Halfpipe will take place throughout the season on both mountains utilizing the best terrain available, starting December 16. Competitions open to skiers and snowboarders, all ages welcome. Helmets are mandatory.

The Canadian Tenors - Christmas to Remember
December 13 & 14, 2007

The Canadian Tenors (featuring Fraser Walters, Victor Micallef, Remigio Pereira and Jamie McKnight) have been described as Canada's National Treasure with a mountain of talent. They have charmed audiences around the world with their spectacular blend of crowd-pleasing repertoire featuring pop opera, musical theatre, classical and contemporary pieces. As solo artists, the tenors have dazzled thousands in many prestigious operas and theatrical productions throughout North America and Europe. Together, they are taking the world by storm. Joining the Canadian Tenors are The Celtic Divas, fresh from a European tour. Their repertoire is enormous, but in each genre, whether folk, opera or popular song, The Celtic Divas find a welcome home with their diversity, soaring tone and graceful manner. Whistler Holiday Experience
December 21, 2007 - January 6, 2008

The Whistler Holiday Experience, running daily* from December 21 through January 5, is an exciting new family fun zone located centrally at the TELUS Whistler Conference Centre. Featuring miniature golf, an inflatable jumping, bouncing and sliding village, video games and a screening room with holiday-themed films, this free indoor entertainment venue is fun for all ages.
*Please note due to alternate programming Whistler Holiday Experience will be closed on December 24, 25, 26 and 31.

Dress Like Santa Day

King and Queen of the Rail
December 29, 2007

The King of the Rail and Queen of the Rail return December 29 for another season of rail jam contests which run on selected Saturday nights under the Magic Chair on Blackcomb. King of the Rail contests are for both guys and girls, while Queen of the Rail contests are for girls only. Separate categories for snowboarders and skiers, male and female and adult and youth.

First Night Whistler

Whistler's First Night is the legendary come one come all New Year's Eve Celebration that takes over Whistler's pedestrian only Village Stroll and the TELUS Whistler Conference Centre to say goodbye to the old and to welcome the new. The 18th annual family friendly, alcohol-free evening promotes a "Celebration of the Arts" and this year's event features an inspiring program of great live music, art workshops and street entertainment for people of all ages. The lively energy that is First Night gets underway at 6 p.m. on December 31, 2007 which leaves just enough time to explore and experience the celebration in its entirety before the fireworks erupt and January 1, 2008 is upon us.

Whistler Blackcomb Opens Superpipe on Blackcomb Mountain

Whistler Blackcomb is ready to open it's Superpipe on Blackcomb Mountain for Sunday December 15. Mountain official promise the the Pipe will be mid-season quality.

Snowboard JumpBlackcomb's Superpipe will open at full size -- 120 metre / 394 ft. in length with 5.5 metre / 18 ft.-high walls.

Blackcomb's operations crew have been working 24/7 getting the pipe ready with snowmaking, grooming and dining. All five of the Mountain's terrain parks will be operating. Skiers and riders will find a mix of jumps, rails, boxes, hips and picnic tables totaling 25 features in all for the Habitat and Nintendo Terrain Parks.

Brian Finestone, Whistler Blackcomb Terrain Park Supervisor noted...

"We’ve had our snow guns on full pull over the past couple of weeks to make sure we have the best pipe possible. We are making snow all over our parks and will have some larger jump features coming in the next week."

The Highest Level Park will officially open mid-December but larger features are being built on that side so people can get a feel for the bigger terrain and the flow of the park before the XL features are built. Skiers and riders can purchase their Highest Level pass when build-out is complete at Whistler Blackcomb ticket offices.

With over 70 acres of park terrain between Whistler and Blackcomb skiers and riders can experience any level of freestyle terrain they desire and progress at their own speed.

What Is Happening in Whistler in 2008?

Pontiac GMC Canadian Championships, February 6 to 11 - Featuring Men and Women Downhill and Super Combined. And then on February 12 and 13 our Juniors will compete in the Wold Junior Qualification Slalom and Giant Slalom races.

FIS Whistler World Cup Alpine Ski Races on February 18 to 24 - Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G and Downhill competitions will be help for men and women. The courses will be the same that will be used during the 2010 Olympics. Watch the athletes get a taste of our mountain!

Last days of 2007 in Whistler

Christmas is now gone, wrapping paper and ribbon are on the floor and leftovers of turkey diners in the fridge.
Between skiing and snowboarding the fresh snow and cosy evenings by the fire, the days seem to stretch while we’re waiting for the New Year.

On December 27 the voice of Allison Crowe made us all dream of far away places and eternal love.
Tonight and tomorrow, it is a ballet: Divertissement with Goh Ballet. A tale that will take us all over the world and celebrate the end of 2007 with an experience to remember.
December 30 Warren Miller will present his Playground film showcasing global destinations from Sweden to Canada through the Arabian Desert.

And of course there are still the innumerable other activities offered in Whistler, from outdoor sports to fondue nights, live music and much more.

2007 ends on a high note here in the mountains of British Columbia.
A tip for 2008: come visit Whistler, ski the largest terrain in North America and be entertained by the Whistler scene!
